Gainesville City School System Makerspace 2015-2016 Highlights

Students at Gainesville High School applied their knowledge and explored their creativity in the Makerspace at the 9th Grade Center. We are so proud of their accomplishments and creative spirits. Below are some of the amazing projects and activities that were completed in the Makerspace in the 2015-2016 school year.

3D Printed Track & Car Race

Students in physical science learned how to apply their science knowledge through a STEAM project, which focused on creating the fastest car possible on a 3D printed track. Students used collaborative skills to design and prototype their concept car ideas with cardboard, screws, nails, washers, hot glue, sockets (weights), and cell phones to video record their track times. Students then learned how to use CAD to design and 3D print their car and wheels. Also, students realized they had to constantly improve upon their design, if they wanted to win the race at the end of the week. The groups consistently redesigned and tweaked their concept car by redrawing and 3D printing their car or wheel designs.

Students used Tinkercad & OnShape in the Makerspace to 3D model, design, and print their concept cars!

Geodesic Dome & Math Art with Sewing Projects

Students in math learned how to apply their math knowledge through a creative project, which focused on using math in an artistic method. Students used collaborative skills to design and create a geodesic dome with tape, scissors, rulers, and newspaper rolls. Students also used sewing to create art patterns by using coordinates to plot their patterns.

Students in social studies and language arts used the Makerspace to create 3D products that exhibited student knowledge and mastery of content knowledge covered in their curriculum.
